Originally patented in 1868 by James Simons, many variations were produced in subsequent years. This nickel-plated version is believed to have been manufactured around 1925. The iron is marked with the Stanley "Sweetheart" trademark. It is the original iron, even though Stanley had nothing to do with its production, other than to sell a few block plane irons to whichever company made these.
