Not many mass-produced saws can be called rare, but the Star Saw made by the Wheeler, Madden & Clemson company would certainly qualify. Its unique handle captured the attention of woodworkers everywhere, but failed to capture many sales. Now, 151 years after it was introduced, there are only a handful still in existence.
Admittedly, this one is not in the best condition, but it would make a good placeholder in a collection until a better example came along -- maybe, someday. This saw is in the condition in which is was found, except for the repair of the top horn which was missing completely. Otherwise, it has not been sharpened or even cleaned. The dust of the ages can still be found in the corners and recesses on the handle. The namesake Star saw screw and the engraved conical nuts are original.
