Vintage Disston 3D Saw Sharpening Vise
This vise has always been a favorite of serious saw sharpeners. The Disston 3D vise has thick cast iron castings to securely hold the saw and dampen vibration.
This example is better than most, as it has a complete bench clamp assembly. Many are missing the foot on the clamp screw. The ears on the screw are often broken, as well. The jaws close firmly and evenly.
One weak point of these vises is that the rubbing of the locking clamp against the cast iron body will wear a divot over time, reducing the clamping force on the jaws. One fix to restore the full clamping force is to mill out a shallow pocket in the casting and affix a piece of tempered steel where it comes in contact with the locking clamp. This fix has been made on this vise and will provide years of reliable service.
