The handle on this saw has the four patent dates indicative of an early D-8 model, which is further supported by the design of the medallion used in the 1876-77 period. The so-called Centennial Screw design had a thin, fragile threaded stem that was easily broken. This one is still intact. The other four screws must have broken, as this saw was missing all four. Replacements were made by modifying newer style screws.

The handle has some wear and both horns were trimmed by a previous owner. Perhaps they had broken or maybe he preferred a saw with shorter horns. Either way, they were neatly trimmed and smoothed long ago and will not pose an issue to the sawing action.

The 28 inch long blade has the marks and light pitting of a 145 year tool, but is otherwise perfectly straight. The 5ppi rip teeth have been freshly sharpened:

Tooth Type: rip
Rake Angle: 7º
Fleam Angle: 00º
Slope Angle: 0º
Tooth Set: 0.006"
